The Power of Math to Understand the Brain

Nearly all of the STEM disciplines overlap in some fashion. As a result, when we consider math and neuroscience, this comes as no surprise. There is a surprising amount of overlap between these seemingly unrelated topics. While neuroscience focuses on the study of the brain and the nervous system, mathematics is the study of numbers, forms, and patterns. But what relationship do these two disciplines have with one another?

As it turns out, a lot. Math can be used to model anything, and in neuroscience, math can be used to model the brain. It can model the behavior of neurons and it can simulate neural networks, which are essentially building blocks of the brain. Mathematical models of the brain can be used to understand how these networks work. They can also be used to predict how the brain could react and respond to different stimuli. This information can be used to develop new treatments for neurological disorders and to improve our understanding of how the brain works.

In addition to modeling the brain, mathematics can also be used to analyze brain data. For example, neuroscientists can use mathematical techniques to analyze fMRI scans to identify the areas of the brain that are active during different tasks.
