Inflammation in Neurodegenerative Diseases

Hi everyone, long time no see! College applications took up much time, but now I'm back and ready to write. In this blog post, we'll discuss how inflammation contributes to neurodegenerative diseases.

The neurons work tirelessly to keep everything in our body running smoothly. Inflammation can cause chaos in our neurons, and in neurodegenerative diseases, chronic inflammation plays a major role in neuronal damage and decline. 

Although inflammation in the short term is good since it's the body's natural response to fighting infection and injury, in neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and ALS, inflammation can lead to the destruction of healthy brain cells.

This inflammation can cause severe neuronal damage as the persistent inflammation weakens and destroys neurons, leading to memory loss, movement problems, and other symptoms. Additionally, inflammation can lead to damaged connections between neurons, hindered brain function, and brain atrophy.

Calming the immune system, targeting protein buildups, and administering antioxidants are proven ways to fight back against this chronic inflammation. The good news is that ongoing research holds promise for developing more effective treatments, offering hope for patients and their families!
